The universe in which The Magic Helix resides is populated by creatures. Whether those creatures carry within them The Magic Helix is an interesting question.
Also these can serve symbolic purposes helping us create a language around which we can expand our understanding of how things work.
In many mythological settings these creatures can be mentors or they can be meddlers. The mentor assists the seeker to answer the questions being asked. The meddler, whether maliciously or inadvertently, distracts the seeker from it. There are many reasons to support assigning the female hawk and the male lion to the role of mentor, and the female rat and the male snake to the role of meddler.
